Exam Board Pearson Edexcel
Course Code 4EA1
Course Route Specification A, Coursework Route

Course Overview

Students build advanced proficiency in reading, analysing and comparing non-fiction texts (including the Edexcel Anthology) and in producing original writing tailored to specific audiences and purposes.

The course blends one final exam with a coursework portfolio, offering multiple modes to demonstrate mastery: timed comparative reading, transactional writing (e.g., article, speech, letter), and imaginative/descriptive writing.

The coursework route strengthens drafting and redrafting skills across a longer timeframe, while the examination secures confident, time-bounded performance.

Course Content

Reading (critical & comparative)

  • Close reading of non-fiction drawn from the Edexcel Anthology and unseen sources (e.g., travel writing, journalism, memoir, persuasive/informative texts).
  • Comparative analysis of tone, perspective, argument, structure and language; synthesis of ideas across texts; evaluation of writers' methods with precise evidence.

Writing (original composition)

  • Transactional writing: speeches, articles, letters, and reports adapting form, audience and purpose, using structured argument, register control and rhetorical strategies.
  • Imaginative/descriptive writing: crafting imagery, voice and viewpoint, coherent narrative structure, cohesion and paragraphing; accurate grammar, varied syntax and ambitious vocabulary.

Coursework route (Component 3 – NEA)

  • Assignment A (Reading): a critical response to three Anthology texts (at least one prose and one poetry), evidencing selection/interpretation (AO1) and analysis of language/structure (AO2).
  • Assignment B (Writing): one piece of imaginative writing demonstrating communication and organisation with technical accuracy (AO4). (Coursework replaces Paper 2 in the coursework route.)

Assessment

  • Component 1: Non-Fiction Texts & Transactional Writing (exam) — 60%, 2 hours
  • Component 3: Coursework (two assignments) — 40%
