Course Overview

At Capital School, the decision to follow Combined Science (Double Award) or Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics as three separate iGCSEs) is made by the school, based on sustained performance and teacher judgement. Both pathways are respected; Triple Science provides additional depth.

All Science pathways are delivered on a modular route to spread assessment and provide early feedback:

  • Unit 1 examinations are taken in Year 10, Term 3.
  • Unit 2 examinations are taken in Year 11 (final series).

Combined Science builds strong foundations across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, emphasising core concepts, scientific enquiry and application.

Course Content

Biology

Cells & organisation; biological molecules & enzymes; human physiology; reproduction & inheritance; ecology & sustainability.

Chemistry

Principles of chemistry; bonding; rates/energetics/electrolysis (core ideas); inorganic families; introductory organic chemistry and polymers.

Physics

Forces & motion; electricity & magnetism; energy transfers & resources; waves (sound/light); particle model & basic astrophysics.

Working Scientifically

Planning, data handling, evaluation, scientific communication.

Assessment

Assessment (Modular timing)

  • Biology Unit 1 (Year 10, Term 3) — written exam
  • Chemistry Unit 3 (Year 10, Term 3) — written exam
  • Physics Unit 5 (Year 10, Term 3) — written exam
  • Biology Unit 2 (Year 11) — written exam
  • Chemistry Unit 4 (Year 11) — written exam
  • Physics Unit 6 (Year 11) — written exam

Across Unit 1 and Unit 2 papers, question styles include multiple-choice, short answer, calculations, data analysis and extended response. Unit 1 results combine with Unit 2 results to award two iGCSE grades for Combined Science.

Why Choose This Subject?

(Compulsory)

Science is compulsory at KS4. Combined Science offers a broad, balanced route with staged assessment to build confidence and scientific literacy.

Progression Routes

  • A-level Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) for learners showing strong attainment and interest
  • A-level Psychology, Geography, Environmental Science, PE/Sport Science
  • A wide range of post-16 programmes valuing analytical and quantitative skills
