Moving to Bahrain with Children? Here's How Schooling Works

19 July 2026 Capital School Bahrain

Relocating to a new country with children is exciting and stressful in equal measure — and for most families, sorting out schools sits right at the top of the worry list. The good news? Bahrain is one of the easier places in the Gulf to move to with kids. The school options are strong, the community is welcoming, and admissions are more flexible than many parents expect.

Here's what you need to know before (and just after) you land.

The school landscape in Bahrain

Bahrain has a wide range of private and international schools covering British, American, Indian (CBSE), IB and other curricula. British curriculum schools are among the most popular with expat families, largely because of how portable the system is — if you move again in a few years, your child can continue seamlessly in the UK or in British schools almost anywhere in the world.

The academic year runs from September to June, split into three terms, with the long summer break in July and August. Most schools operate Sunday-to-Thursday or Monday-to-Friday weeks depending on the school, so check the working week when you shortlist.

Can we join mid-year?

Yes — and this surprises a lot of relocating families. While September is the natural entry point, most schools in Bahrain accept students throughout the year, subject to seat availability. Schools here are used to expat life; children arrive in January, March, even May, and teachers know how to help them catch up and settle.

That said, the popular year groups (Early Years and lower primary especially) do fill up. So the moment your move is confirmed, start contacting schools — even before you arrive. Most schools are happy to run the whole application process remotely, including video tours and online assessments.

The documents you'll need

Get these ready while you're still in your home country — it makes everything faster:

  • Your child's passport (and Bahrain visa/residence permit once issued)
  • Birth certificate
  • Vaccination records
  • School reports from the last two years
  • A transfer certificate or leaving letter from the current school — get this attested before you leave, as some schools require attestation from your home country
  • Passport-size photos

CPR cards (the Bahrain ID) come after you arrive, and schools understand that — most will accept the application first and take the CPR copies later. If anything is missing, just ask the school; admissions teams here deal with relocating families every single week.

What about costs?

Fees vary widely between schools, so ask for the complete picture: tuition, registration fee, uniforms, books, transport and activities. If your employer offers a schooling allowance, check exactly what it covers and how the school prefers to invoice. Many schools also run sibling discounts and early registration offers, which are always worth asking about.

Helping your child actually settle

Paperwork aside, this is the part that matters most. A few things that genuinely help:

Visit the school together before the first day if you can, so the building and faces feel familiar. Get your child into an activity they already love — football, swimming, art — because friendships form fastest around shared interests. Keep home routines steady during the first months, and stay in close touch with the class teacher. Most children take a term or so to fully find their feet, and that's perfectly normal.

One more thing — talk about the move positively at home. Children take their emotional cues from parents. If you treat Bahrain as an adventure, chances are they will too.

A quick word on timing

If you have any choice over your relocation date, arriving in the summer and starting school in September gives children the cleanest start. But if the job says January, don't stress — a mid-year start with the right school works out fine far more often than not.
